A Short History of Ambulance Gateway

Ambulance Gateway has its roots in "the ambulance project" of the Rotary Club of Aurora Gateway . In 2005, members of that club attended a Rotary Tri-District conference in Durango, Colorado, where they connected with members of the Club Rotario de Ciudad Juarez Norte who voiced the need for emergency vehicles in Mexico. Upon returning to Aurora, they spoke with fellow Rotarians Bob Waples (a member of the Rotary Club of Aurora Gateway ) and David Patterson (a member of the Rotary Club of Aurora). Each worked for Rural/Metro Ambulance and were excited by the club's vision of sending an ambulance from Denver to Juarez. Together, they made it happen later that same year.

That first ambulance was donated by Rural/Metro Ambulance and sent to the town of Praxedis, Chihuahua, Mexico. The two clubs continued this partnership for eight years, distributing six more Rural/Metro ambulances from San Diego, Denver, Seattle, and Orlando to Mexico during that period. In that effort, they were supported financially by other Rotary clubs in the Denver area.

In 2010, the Aurora club sent another Rural/Metro ambulance to the Lifeland Clinic in Abosomtweagya, Ghana. In doing so, the club extended the reach of the project to a second country and gave rise to questions about where these efforts might lead.

In 2011, the Aurora Gateway club went through a visioning process in which this effort was identified as the club's signature project. Over the next two years, plans were made to formalize this project and make it more sustainable and extendable.

On August 14, 2013, Ambulance Gateway was formed (with Bob Waples as a founding director) to carry these efforts into the future as a new, independent non-profit organization dedicated solely to this mission. Based in Aurora, Colorado, we now work hand-in-hand with the Rotary Club of Aurora Gateway to make this vision a reality.

In June 2015, we struck an agreement with Project C.U.R.E. in which we supply ambulances to their clients through a partnership, thereby allowing us to reach most of the planet.

For a complete list of the ambulances that we have processed since our inception, please see our Recipient Summary page on this site.
